Variety
Drawn illustrations
Drawing has always been one of my favorite things to do. In addition to designing for the weekly magazine, I'm occasionally tasked with illustrating both short and long-form stories.
Editorial illustration is one of my favorite mediums of visual communication because it uses a perfect balance of on-the-nose, literal imagery, with abstract and metaphorical representations. With each new project I like to push myself out of my comfort zone and try new styles, colors, perspective, scales, etc.
Photo illustration
Something I've also started to do at Variety is photo illustration! I'm still learning the ropes of making collages and figuring out styles I like. Each one is like a puzzle, and I love the process of finding new and creative ways to work around photo challenges (like when someone's portrait is cut off in a very inconvenient spot).
Created with the Procreate app and Photoshop.
The Atlantic
I participated in the recruitment process for The Atlantic magazine. Between stages of interviewing, I was asked to create a feature design out of a story that had been published September 2020. All the photo illustrations in this design were done by me with Adobe Photoshop and the Procreate app.
